Spring 26: The History of American Indian Education explores federal policy as it relates to American
Indian Education and establishes connections to “civilization” efforts implemented across
Indigenous populations globally. In this course, we will specifically study educational models that existed pre-colonization and consider how American Indian education models have evolved through ongoing governmental and missionary influence. We will also learn about the development of educational models developed by Tribal Nations and communities following the passage of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975 and the Native American Languages Act of 1990.
