Biography
Angela (Sonquo) Tapia was born and raised in the Andean Altiplano region, which is also the geographic area of her research. She holds a PhD in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, where she also received portfolios in Native and Indigenous Studies as well as Women and Gender Studies. Her research on contemporary mujeres de polleras (women of/from polleras) focuses on how the relationship between Indigenous women and their clothing differs radically from the subject/object relationship often assumed between people and their clothes. In her methodology, besides conducting interviews and participant observation Tapia dresses in and tailors polleras.
